England's tour of India to be broadcast by Channel 4

Zak Crawley faces a nervous wait to discover the extent of a wrist injury on the eve of England's Test series in India after being sent for scans in Chennai.

Crawley, who turned 23 on Wednesday, slipped during a practice session and there are fears he may have sustained a fracture, according to The Guardian.

Such an injury would almost certainly rule him out of the four-match campaign.

The Kent batsman, who struggled against spin during the recent tour of Sri Lanka after impressing during summer series against Pakistan and West Indies, did not take part in training on Wednesday.

An England statement read: “Zak Crawley did not train today at England’s practice session in Chennai. He slipped outside the dressing room yesterday (Tuesday) and has injured his right wrist.

“We are waiting on the results of scans and will know more tomorrow, ahead of our final practice. There is nothing further to add at this stage.”

Should Crawley be ruled out, England captain Joe Root - playing his 100th Test - may be compelled to move to No.3, where Crawley was expected to bat following the return to the squad of Rory Burns after his paternity leave.

Ben Stokes, who sat out the trip to Sri Lanka but is back with his teammates in Chennai, has also filled the No.3 role in the past, while Dan Lawrence - the Essex batsman who made 73 on debut in Galle last month - would be another option.

The first day of the first Test is scheduled for Friday. The series will be broadcast in the UK by Channel 4.
