GEORGE DOBELL - EXCLUSIVE: The Cricketer understands that Stewart, the director of cricket at Surrey, was the favourite option for the MD of England men's cricket, Rob Key
Alec Stewart is understood to have declined the chance to become England's new head selector.
The Cricketer understands that Stewart, the director of cricket at Surrey, was the favourite option for the MD of England men's cricket, Rob Key.
But, having asked for time to reflect on the possibility, Stewart has decided to remain with Surrey.

Stewart was also Ashley Giles' first choice for the role of head coach before Chris Silverwood was appointed at the end of 2019.
At the time, however, Stewart felt that he was unable to take up the role due to a family health situation. The role of selector involves less travel, but this may have been a factor in Stewart's decision.
While the role of selector was abolished during the tenure of Giles as managing director of England's men's sides, Rob Key, the current MD, has made no secret of his desire to reinstate it.

The Stewart family have a long and impressive association with Surrey. Both Alec and his father, Micky, captained the club, while Alec's brother, Neil, remains a highly respected coach at the club.
As director of cricket, 59-year-old Stewart has twice overseen Surrey winning the County Championship (in 2018 and 2022).
ECB management will now set about finding an alternative. It is currently unclear who Key will appoint but Steve Harmison has confirmed his interest in the role and might now be considered favourite.
