Ben Stokes has labelled Jos Buttler the "obvious choice" to replace Eoin Morgan following the wicketkeeper’s appointment as England’s new white-ball captain.

Morgan retired from international cricket on June 28, stating "now is the right time to do so".

Buttler served as Morgan’s vice-captain in recent years and has captained England on a stand-in basis in nine ODIs and five T20Is, most recently against the Netherlands in Amstelveen when Morgan suffered a groin injury ahead of the third ODI.

Commenting on Buttler’s appointment, new Test captain Stokes said: "He was the obvious choice once Morgs decided to retire. He’s been vice-captain for a number of years. Nothing will change.

"Jos will continue the ethos and mindset that Morgs brought to us from 2015 so, honestly, I don’t think you’ll see anything change whatsoever. It is Jos’ time to take the team forward and I’m pretty sure it will be pretty much the same as Morgs left the team."

Addressing Buttler’s Test future, Stokes continued: "I don’t think him being appointed one-day captain does any more or less good. The team we have here is the Test team I want going forward.

"When we sat down at the start of the summer and selected the squad, it was because those were the guys we wanted in every position and they were the best to do that. At the moment, it’s about giving this team time to succeed and perform."
