County stars lead experimental England squad for Ireland ODIs

With the provisional 15-strong squad due to travel to India for the World Cup later this month, Zak Crawley will lead a fresh-looking 13-strong group for matches at Headingley, Trent Bridge and Bristol

Uncapped trio Sam Hain, Jamie Smith and George Scrimshaw are among the stand-out names in England's experimental squad for the one-day international series against Ireland.

Due to the matches being in close proximity to when the team are due to depart for India to defend their title, a 13-strong second-string has been unveiled.

Zak Crawley, who has played just three ODIs more than two years ago, will captain the group with Test opening partner Ben Duckett announced as his deputy.

Perhaps the most interesting selections come in the form of three untested players at full international level.

Hain, who possesses the second-best men's List A average in history of 57.96 (50 innings minimum) is rewarded for years of consistent form in white-ball cricket. He captained England Lions on their recent List A tour of Sri Lanka last winter and, but for a hamstring injury, would have been in the United Arab Emirates as part of a combined trip with the Test squad before the Pakistan series.

Surrey wicketkeeper-batter Smith, 23, has also been knocking on the door of late. He also made an impression in Sri Lanka last winter, scoring the fastest Lions century, hitting 126 from 86 balls in Galle.

Scrimshaw, who is bound for Northamptonshire at the end of the season, was previously a member of ECB's winter pace bowling programme and has hit a hot streak of form since recovering from back injuries. He played for the Lions last summer against the touring South Africans.

Harry Brook, who is closing in on a World Cup place after being added to the squad for the New Zealand ODIs, is also included alongside Rehan Ahmed, Brydon Carse, Will Jacks and Luke Wood - each of whom was involved in the recent T20Is.

Phil Salt returns to the fold while there are recalls for Someret's Craig Overton and Matthew Potts of Durham.

As well as being without England's first-choice players ahead of the World Cup, the selection panel led by Luke Wright also consulted with the first-class counties during the process of compiling the group.

The matches at Headingley (September 20), Trent Bridge (September 23) and Bristol (September 26) overlap with the last two rounds of the County Championship when matters around the title, promotion and relegation are expected to be settled.

That clash may explain a number of the omissions, namely that of Hampshire captain James Vince, Somerset allrounder Lewis Gregory or Essex batter Dan Lawrence.
