Gudakesh Motie removed the England captain Ben Stokes (4) with a sharp-turning delivery in his first over of the day.

The left-arm spinner bowling over the wicket landed it outside Stokes' off-stump before it took the middle stump out of the ground.

The wicket fell on the final ball of the 55th over to leave 254 for 5 after a promising start from the England batters on the second morning of the Lord's Test against the West Indies.

The ball appeared to land in the rough outside the left-hander's off stump before turning sharply as Stokes tried to work the delivery through the leg side.

The Guyanan-born bowler struck again just five minutes before lunch as he bowled Joe Root (68) with another brilliant delivery.

Motie bowled the arm ball and the quicker delivery beat Root’s outside edge, knocking back his off-stump.

It was another ball that left an England batter in shock as Root could only smile as he walked off. Stokes and Root were then seen on the Lord’s balcony discussing their respective dismissals.

The wicket fell in the penultimate over of the morning session as England headed for lunch on 293 for six with a lead of 172.

The wicket of Stokes brought England debutant Jamie Smith to the crease and he kept the first six balls he faced in Test cricket from Motie without scoring a run.

On his seventh ball, Motie bowled him a generous drag down which Smith hit comfortably to the boundary for his first runs in Test cricket.

Motie is playing in his sixth Test match and was a surprise selection in conditions that are not traditionally conducive to spin.

England's sole spinner Shoaib Bashir did not bowl in West Indies' first innings but would have been delighted to see some assistance ahead of a potentially more important role in the second innings.

Harry Brook was the first England wicket to fall after he was bounced out after reaching fifty by Alzarri Joseph.
