Yorkshire head coach Ottis Gibson has issued an update on Dom Bess' future at the club, stating "he's still our player".

Ahead of the latest round of County Championship fixtures, Yorkshire brought in Surrey spinner Dan Moriarty on a four-match loan, prompting Bess to head to Warwickshire in search of game time.

Bess initially joined Yorkshire on loan in 2019 before signing a four-year contract ahead of the 2021 campaign, and has taken 83 wickets in 36 first-class matches for the club. However, he struggled for form during the first half of this season, taking 12 wickets at 51.33 in five County Championship outings.

On debut for Warwickshire against Essex, he took three wickets and scored a half-century (63 off 68) in the second innings.

Moriarty, meanwhile, who was making only his second first-class appearance of the season, collected 5 for 139 as Yorkshire played out a draw with Gloucestershire.

However, despite Moriarty being linked with a permanent move to Headingley, Gibson still sees a role for Bess at the club.

"Bowling spin at Headingley is very difficult," Gibson said. "Dom Bess bowling here, he's not had the best of times.

"I felt like if we could bring in Dan Moriarty to work alongside Bessy, that would give us a better opportunity to win games. That was the intention.

"I'm not sure I'd have played two spinners on that pitch, but there will be opportunities when we go away or later in the year to play spinners. Dan came in and gave us nice control, and he got five wickets.

"With regards to Bessy, he's still our player. When I told him he wasn't going to play this game, he asked to go on loan. But when his loan period finishes, he'll come back to us. He's been brilliant in the Blast [and] he is available for Friday night [against Lancashire]."
