Wayne Madsen makes trophy pledge after agreeing Derbyshire stay to 2024

Last season's leading LV= Insurance County Championship run-scorer believes the current crop under Mickey Arthur can end the club's wait for a major trophy, which goes back to 1993

Ending Derbyshire's lengthy major trophy drought is the priority for Wayne Madsen after the veteran batter extended his contract until the end of the 2024 season.

Since arriving at the club in 2009, the 38-year-old has scored 19,496 across formats putting him third in the all-time list behind Kim Barnett and Denis Smith.

Last season was among his finest in first-class cricket, scoring 1,273 runs to lead the way in the LV= Insurance County Championship.

In what was a vast improvement on previous campaigns in Mickey Arthur's first season at the helm, Madsen also became the third Derbyshire batter to reach three figures in all three forms of the game.

Already committed for the 2023 season, the fresh terms take Madsen's career into his 40s and his association with the Incora County Ground club to a decade-and-a-half.

"Derbyshire has become my home, my family and I are so happy here and it's where the majority of my career has been played, so it’s an easy decision to extend my stay," he said.

"I've loved my time with the club so far, but there's so much to be excited about with the current project and that's something I want to be a part of."

Missing from Madsen's spell at Derbyshire is a piece of silverware, which has evaded the club since victory in the Benson and Hedges Cup in 1993.

Madsen added: "I want to lift trophies with Derbyshire, the members and supporters deserve success and with Mickey and the current crop of players we have, we are heading in the right direction to do just that."

Confirmation of the deal comes amid a busy winter for Derbyshire. Zak Chappell and Matt Lamb have bolstered the squad while Brooke Guest has secured his future by signing a new deal.

Arthur, who himself is committed until 2025, is looking for more of the same from Madsen.

"Wayne has been consistently one of the best players in county cricket for more than a decade and it's great that he'll be staying with us for longer," he said.

"His 2022 season showed that he’s as good as ever, and having that experience in your top order is invaluable, while his willingness to help our younger players in their development is exactly what we want from our senior players."
