Tom Haines has been ruled out for at least five to six weeks after sustaining an injury to his hand during Sussex’s LV= Insurance County Championship clash with Leicestershire.

The skipper, who won the toss and elected to bat at Hove, enjoyed a productive start with Ali Orr, moving Sussex to 61 for 0 after 10 overs.

However, he was surprised by a delivery from Chris Wright in the following over and received lengthy on field treatment.

He retired hurt on 24 (37) in the 12th over, with Tom Alsop replacing him in the middle. Subsequent scans revealed his hand was broken.

Haines has scored 604 runs at 43.14 in nine first-class outings for Sussex in 2022, second only to Cheteshwar Pujara among his teammates. He's also picked up eight wickets at 39.
