Surrey allrounder Jamie Overton has suffered a stress fracture of the lumbar spine.

Overton has flown back to the UK from a scheduled stint in the International League T20.

The Telegraph reported on Tuesday that Overton is likely to miss the Ashes as a result of the problem, which is set to rule him out of the start of the county summer.

Overton is understood to have undergone further scans to establish just how bad the injury is; he is the latest in a long line of England fast bowlers in recent times to sustain a stress fracture.

Overton, who holds a national pace bowling contract, made his England Test debut against New Zealand last summer but has subsequently fallen down the pecking order. He toured Pakistan in December but did not in any of the three Test matches.

Surrey have plenty of fast bowling options in reserve, including the West Indies international Kemar Roach, who will be available for the first six games of the County Championship season.

The Telegraph also reported that Sean Abbott, the Australian quick, will also be joining ahead of the new campaign. Surrey are defending Division One champions.
