Northamptonshire captain Alex Wakely extends contract until 2020

Northants have announced that their captain Alex Wakely has agreed a contract extension which will keep him at the county until at the least the end of the 2020 season.

The 30-year-old is entering his fifth year as captain in all three formats for Northants, and is still the only man to captain them to win two major trophies – the 2013 and 2016 English T20 titles.

Wakely is at number 338 in the T20 Player Index after Northants endured a disappointing 2018 Vitality Blast, finishing bottom of the North Group. He is, however, confident things are going to change.

“I am buzzing about sticking around at the club I love so much,” he said.

“I have so much more I want to achieve, both individually and as a captain, and I can’t wait to get going next year.

“Lifting those two trophies have been the proudest moments of my career so far and I’ll be doing all I can to bring another one to Wantage Road over the next couple of years.

“After the season we had last year, a lot of things had to change and I now think it’s an exciting time to be involved with Northamptonshire cricket.”
