Peter Handscomb says Middlesex still have room for improvement despite securing their opening win of the season over Glamorgan at Sophia Gardens.

After a draw in round one of the LV= Insurance County Championship against Derbyshire at Lord's, Richard Johnson claimed his first victory as head coach by an innings and 82 runs.

Toby Roland-Jones collected second-innings figures of 5 for 40 and Tom Helm took 3 for 24 to wrap up the win inside the first hour of day three.

Middlesex had a 214-run lead after both sides had batted first after John Simpson's century and 65 for Roland-Jones.

The ex-England seamer then helped reduce Glamorgan to 78 for 6 and the final four wickets fell without delay on the third morning.

"Great way to start, I think that’s pretty close to the blueprint that we want to play this season, we have been doing a lot of work on our identity and how we want to go about it as a group," said Handscomb after his first Middlesex outing in the Championship since last July.

"That was very, very impressive. To come in and see what all the boys have done over the pre-season, all the hard work they have done, to come out and play a game like that is just awesome.

"We missed (Roland-Jones) last year for quite a long period of the season so it is great to see him back, clean bill of health and just bowling beautifully.

"He didn’t miss, he just came in and to be relentless on his line and length. Moving the ball just enough to find the edge or beat the inside edge.

"Credit to him, he has obviously done a lot of work to get his body right and then in pre-season he has come out better and stronger for it. Watching him go about his work was great."

The Middlesex bowling display was made all the more impressive given the absence of Tim Murtagh and Ethan Bamber.

Handscomb could find no fault with the quartet of Afridi, Roland-Jones, Helm and Martin Andersson, who combined for all 20 Glamorgan wickets.

Their dominance was highlighted by left-arm spinner Thilan Walallawita, on his first appearance since gaining British citizenship, not bowling a single delivery in the match.

"It was proper bowling and being relentless," added Handscomb. "All four bowlers were relentless in what they were trying to do.

"We didn't have to do much in terms of the field, kept to simple plans, and just keep bash a length and do our job from there.

"It was impressive seeing us go about what we want to do as a team.

Handscomb, whose side host Leicestershire next week, added: "We still had moments in the game where we could have taken a slightly different option or got an extra batting bonus point of been slightly more ruthless with the ball.

"Only small things because we've played a good game, but just because you've played a good game doesn't mean you can't come away with something else to be good at in the next game."
