Michael Hogan agrees one-year Kent deal after U-turning on retirement

The 41-year-old had seemingly drawn a line under his professional career after leaving Glamorgan at the end of the 2022 campaign but he has committed to another year on the circuit

Michael Hogan has reversed his decision to retire from professional cricket to join Kent for the 2023 season.

The Australian seamer, 41, who has taken 681 first-class wickets, will also form part of head coach Matt Walker's backroom team.

Hogan, deemed a domestic player due to his British passport and length of service, joined Glamorgan in 2013 and took 654 wickets across the formats for the South Wales outfit.

In his penultimate campaign, he led the team to victory in the Royal London Cup, taking the final wicket to beat Durham at Trent Bridge.

After being given an emotional send-off at the end of the 2022 campaign, Hogan was expected to play grade cricket amid offers from other counties.

But the allure of another year on the circuit has proven too tempting to turn down, with Kent set to benefit from his 13 years of experience.

"I'm really looking forward to a fresh challenge at this stage of my playing career," he said.

"After 10 memorable seasons with Glamorgan the opportunity to play for Kent in Division One of the Championship, and to also cut my teeth mentoring in a new environment, is an exciting one."

Kent are partial to players in their tender years. Darren Stevens, who is still considering his future, played at Canterbury to the age of 46 until his release in September and Hogan will fill at least part of the void with the ball.

He also represented Southern Brave in The Hundred during last summer but it remains to be seen if he returns.

Director of cricket Paul Downton added: "Hoges has been an outstanding bowler for many years and will bring a vast amount of experience to our bowling unit.

"His numbers show he is an invaluable acquisition, and he continues to be a threat in both four-day and T20 cricket.

"I’m particularly excited about the knowledge he will bring with him, which will be invaluable to all our bowlers, particularly the young and upcoming talents at the club."
