Matthew Maynard says Glamorgan can't allow Middlesex defeat to define their season

Glamorgan coach Matthew Maynard admits his side face a battle in LV=Insurance County Championship Division Two after suffering their first defeat of the campaign to Middlesex at Sophia Gardens.

Toby Roland-Jones and Tom Helm combined to take the hosts' three remaining second-innings wickets inside the first hour of day three, to clinch an emphatic innings and 82-run success.

It leaves the club with a draw, victory and defeat from their opening three matches against Durham, Nottinghamshire and Middlesex.

"Generally it is called sport - it can happen," Maynard responded when asked to explain the manner of the defeat, a week on from beating title favourites Notts, according to the ECB Reporters Network.

"I think it was a good toss to win. Middlesex exploited the conditions well, put us under a lot of pressure.

"I think the wicket was maybe a 220 to 250 par on first innings. So, we felt way below there.

"We didn’t show the same discipline with the bat that we showed in the first two games of the season.

"We didn’t set a tone in the second over and we had some soft dismissals in that first innings.

"We fought back into the game really well with the bowling group, got us back in at 110 for 6.

"Got another one there you never know. There may have been a lead of 40 to 60 and we are well in the game.

"As it happened a 110 partnership followed by two 60 odd partnerships took the game away from us.

"The Middlesex bowlers exploited the conditions really well. The strong bowling attack, and yeah, they blew us away."

The match saw the much-anticipated clash between Australia's Marnus Labuschagne and the Pakistan fast-bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi.

It was a battle firmly won by the left-arm seamer, with Afridi getting Labuschage in both innings for eight and 23.

"Not so good for Marnus in this game," Maynard bemoaned. "Obviously he did him twice fairly quickly. That is what the game is about, isn't it?

"You want to see class players against class players and I think there is a lot of quality in the county game from the overseas and domestic players.

"It is a very tough league this. We've got sides who are very well stocked with talent and it is going to be a battle. We've seen the contrast.

"Last game won't define us, our season, and this game won't define our season. We'll regroup, practise well ahead of the Derby game."
