Matt Renshaw's arrival at Somerset delayed by late Australia call-up

The international summons means he will not arrive in Taunton in time for the opening fixture of the campaign, against Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl from April 7

Matt Renshaw will miss the start of Somerset's LV= Insurance County Championship season because of international commitments.

Renshaw received a late call-up to the Australia one-day international squad in Pakistan following positive Covid-19 cases in the Aussie camp.

It means he will not arrive in Taunton in time for the opening fixture of the campaign, against Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl from April 7.

Somerset remain optimistic the batsman will be available for the second game of the new term - and the club's first home first-class match of 2022 - against Essex from April 14.

"We have been in regular communication with Matt over the last few days and everyone at the club fully understands and appreciates the reasons for the short delay in his arriving in the UK," director of cricket Andy Hurry said.

"This is a great reflection on Matt’s development and we wish him all the very best in the upcoming series.

"We are very much looking forward to seeing him wearing the Wyvern again in 2022, and having spoken to him, I can assure all of our members and supporters that he is really excited about returning to play for the club."
