Gloucestershire have issued an apology to former player David Lawrence after he highlighted instances of prejudice during his playing career.

Lawrence was featured on a Sky Sports programme called "You Guys Are History", aired on Friday, September 3, which focused on historical experiences of black players and officials in England and Wales.

The 57-year-old, who played five Tests and one ODI for England, discussed an incident which occurred during his first County Championship away fixture where a teammate left a banana skin outside his bedroom door as well as his experiences of racist abuse from away crowds.

Gloucestershire have since been in touch with Lawrence, with the former fast bowler meeting both the club chairman and chief executive.

In a statement, Gloucestershire said: "The behaviour and attitudes David experienced were as unacceptable then as they are today. The club therefore wishes to apologise unreservedly to David for all the hurt he has experienced, both as a Gloucestershire player and as part of the wider cricketing network.

"The club would also like to apologise to any player or employee of the club who may have experienced similar prejudices during their time at Gloucestershire. We are determined that no-one should have to experience such behaviours and we will continue to welcome feedback, from players past and present, in developing a welcoming and inclusive environment.

"We would like to thank David for his openness, honesty and courage in coming forward and speaking up."

syd is a big man in every respect, for him to have been treated that way is an indictment of the club and the game. I hope he goes from strength to strength.

Sounds sincere...no reason to doubt that it isn't...well done Gloucestershire!
