Glamorgan cancel pre-season Spain tour in light of COVID-19 pandemic

Glamorgan have followed Warwickshire and Gloucestershire in cancelling their pre-season trip to Spain in light of the global outbreak of COVID-19.

The county has made the decision based on the advice of relevant health authorities and experts.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has advised against all but essential travel to the regions that the Spanish Ministry of Health have designated as areas of community transmission of coronavirus. They are Madrid and La Rioja, as well as the municipalities of La Bastida and Vitoria.

Glamorgan’s first team squad had been due to fly out to La Manga on March 19 for a training camp, before returning home a week later on March 26.

They were due to face Gloucestershire in two T20 matches, as well as in a two-day game during their time away.

Instead, the players will continue their pre-season preparations at the county’s indoor facilities at Sophia Gardens.

Director of cricket Mark Wallace said: “While cancelling the tour is not ideal, the health of our players and staff is paramount to the club.

“We have excellent facilities at the ground and our players and coaching staff will work hard to make sure the impact on our pre-season preparation is minimal.”
