The Middlesex spinner has not been selected for any LV= Insurance County Championship or Blast match so far this season, and has gone to the north east in search of regular first-team action.
Sowter will be available in all formats for Durham for the duration of his time at the club, which initially will run until July 16, and can feature in Friday night's game against Lancashire Lightning.

Durham moved for him after Scott Borthwick sustained a wrist injury and requires an injection, ruling him out of the Lancashire fixture.
Middlesex head of men's performance cricket Alan Coleman said: "Sowts hasn't been selected for any first-team action this year due to the progression of other players within the squad.
"We have made a conscious decision to give match experience and opportunities to those players, with an eye on building our longer-term plans."
