Warwickshire have tied down Danny Briggs to a contract extension after the left-arm spinner played a key role in the county’s red-ball double.

Briggs only joined the club from Sussex at the end of last season, before taking 33 wickets in first-class cricket as Warwickshire won the County Championship and Bob Willis Trophy in 2021, having only played four red-ball games in the two previous years at Hove.

The 30-year-old will now remain with the county until the end of the 2024 season, having also made decisive contributions with the bat in a remarkable campaign for Mark Robinson’s side, including three half centuries and a crucial cameo that secured a final batting bonus point against Somerset in the last game of the County Championship season.

“Personally and professionally, the move to Warwickshire really couldn’t have worked out much better,” said Briggs. “Winning the Championship this year has been one of the highlights of my career, but this squad is only going to get stronger, given the number of young players who are coming through. I’m very excited to commit long-term to the Bears and hopefully we can consistently challenge for trophies.

“Additionally, I’ve been made to feel very welcome by everyone at the Club since arriving at the end of last season. My family and I are looking forward to making this our home for the foreseeable future.”

He was rewarded for his form with his county cap and was part of England’s squad for the ODI series against Pakistan once the first-choice team were forced to isolate. He also played five games for Southern Brave in The Hundred, taking seven wickets.

Paul Farbrace, Warwickshire’s director of cricket, added: “Attracting a player of Danny’s quality to the squad at the beginning of last season was fantastic for everyone associated with the club. He came to win trophies and to push for England selection and he’s certainly done both in this first season.

“Danny initially signed on a three-year contract and, with him playing some of the best cricket of his career and making such a big contribution to our Championship success, we wanted to keep this in place by adding an extra year.

“We’re also delighted that Danny has now been able to make his family home in the area, given that he has a huge role to play for Warwickshire at least the next three years.”
