Overall, Harte made 25 first-class appearances for Durham, including five as an ever-present member of Ned Eckersley’s side in the Bob Willis Trophy last year
Batsman Gareth Harte has left Durham to pursue opportunities in South Africa, the country of his birth.
The 27-year-old, a British passport holder, joined Durham in 2017 and was named as the county’s second team player of the year at the end of his maiden season with the club, which opened up a first team berth in the following campaign.
He subsequently struck a century in his second first-class game for the county against Kent and added further hundreds in 2018 against Derbyshire and Middlesex.
Overall, he made 25 first-class appearances for Durham, including five as an ever-present member of Ned Eckersley’s side in the Bob Willis Trophy last year.
“I just want to say a massive thank you to all the players, staff and Durham members for their support since I joined the club,” said Harte.
“Durham gave me the chance to play professional cricket something I always wanted to do, and it has been a real honour to wear the Durham crest over the last few years.

“I now believe it is the right time to step away from the professional game and explore new opportunities here in South Africa. I will remember my time with Durham fondly and wish everyone within the club the best on and off the field.”
Durham director of cricket Marcus North added: “Gareth has been a valuable and popular member of our squad for the past few years.
“He has led by example through his professional behaviours and has shown progression in his game during his time with Durham. Everyone associated with the club wishes Gareth all the best for the future.”
Durham remain well-stocked in the batting department. Earlier in the winter, they re-signed Scott Borthwick, while The Cricketer understands that David Bedingham and Cameron Bancroft are expected to be the club’s overseas players for 2021.
