COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE ROUNDUP: Ed Barnard's century masterminded Warwickshire's successful pursuit of 344 while Sussex secured their first top flight win since 2015
Chester-le-Street (day four of four): Durham 387 & 276-8 dec, Warwickshire 325 & 344-9 - Warwickshire win by one wicket
A sublime century from Ed Barnard and vital knocks from Kai Smith and Michael Booth led Warwickshire to a one-wicket win over Durham in a County Championship thriller.
Warwickshire started well in the morning as Alex Davies looked in good touch for his 50, but his departure led to a mini-collapse before lunch, with the visitors losing four wickets for nine runs at the hands of Ben Raine and Matthew Potts.
However, Warwickshire had the perfect blend of experience and youth in the form of Smith and Barnard, who combined brilliantly for a partnership worth 147 to well and truly take the wind out of Durham's sails.
There was yet another twist though as the hosts bounced back after tea to remove the pair, with Brendan Doggett orchestrating the fightback to set up a grandstand finale and it all went down to the final pair, but Ethan Bamber and Vishwa Fernando remained calm and composed to see the visitors over the line as they reached their target of 344.

Trent Bridge (day four of four): Nottinghamshire 347 & 385, Essex 367 & 106-1 - Match drawn
Jack Haynes, the 24-year-old batter who moved to Nottinghamshire last season, not only surpassed a previous best of 77 for the county, posted in his maiden innings a year and eight days ago, but continued to a crucial first century to add to the five he had made for Worcestershire.
After three men had gone in the day's first seven overs to leave his side just 222 ahead at 242 for 8, his final career-best 142, following a key 77-run recovery stand with Brett Hutton, secured the draw in the County Championship first division against Essex at Trent Bridge.
By the time Haynes's hundred arrived, after eleven balls on 99 with the last man now in, the lead was 320 and 60 overs remained, but Notts declined to declare and, when eventually all out for 385 after a delayed lunch, the nominal Essex target became 366 at seven per over.
Though Nottinghamshire relaxed their bid for breakthroughs only in the last over, there never seemed the remotest chance they might induce panic as Paul Walter reached 41 and his captain Tom Westley a brisk 28 for Essex's unbroken second-wicket before the umpires pulled stumps at 5pm.

Kia Oval (day four of four): Surrey 253 & 342-9, Hampshire 219 & 300-5 - Match drawn
Nick Gubbins and Toby Albert were Hampshire's heroes as they denied Surrey's last-day attempt to force a first victory of the new County Championship season at the Kia Oval.
Gubbins scored a five-hour 117 and Albert an equally defiant 78 not out as Hampshire, starting the day on 35 for 3 in their second innings in pursuit of a 377-run win target, finished on 300 for 5.
Bad light actually had the final say, forcing the players from the field for what turned out to be the loss of four overs, when 10 overs were left and Hampshire were still 78 short of what would have been a remarkable triumph against the 2022, 2023 and 2024 champions.
With just six overs left when the players returned, Jordan Clark sent down two balls – one of which was hit for a single by Albert – and then the players shook hands on the draw.
In truth, however, and despite Tom Prest being unbeaten on 32 alongside Albert, it had seemed increasingly unlikely that Hampshire could have scored the remaining runs anyway against a testing Surrey seam attack in gloomy conditions and with the floodlights on.

Hove (day four of four): Sussex 294 & 501-7 dec, Somerset 201 & 334 - Sussex win by 260 runs
Sussex wore down Somerset's spirited resistance to claim their first win since promotion back to Division One in the County Championship.
Needing six wickets on the final day at the 1st Central County Ground, they eventually bowled Somerset out for 334 to win by 260 runs – their first top-flight victory for a decade.
It was a commendable final-day effort by an attack depleted by the absence of left-armer Sean Hunt, who took nine for 76 in the match but was unable to bowl on the final day because of an injury to his left arm. In addition, off-spinner Jack Carson was troubled by a split spinning finger, which needed patching up.
In their absence, West Indies' quick Jayden Seales stepped up. The 23-year-old Trinidadian, who is in his second season at Hove, took two wickets during an outstanding nine-over spell at the start of the day before returning with the new ball to end an eighth-wicket stand of 82 between Lewis Gregory and Migael Pretorious.
Tom Abell led Somerset's resistance with 96 and there was a half-century for skipper Lewis Gregory but they were always up against it after being dismissed for 201 in their first innings.
