Kyle Abbott set to be fit for Hampshire's title run-in after hamstring worry

Hampshire are expecting to have Kyle Abbott available for the remainder of their LV= Insurance County Championship campaign following an injury scare.

Abbott sustained a hamstring problem during his side's victory over Northamptonshire at the Ageas Bowl last week. He claimed figures of 4 for 52 in the first Northants innings, having made a critical half-century with the bat, but only managed four overs in the second. 

The Hampshire attack-leader was sent for a scan to determine the extent of the damage, with captain James Vince saying: "He is confident with the gap we've got he'll be available for Kent. Fingers crossed he’s okay."

Vince's prayers have been answered, and The Cricketer understands the club's management are optimistic Abbott will be fit for that clash with Kent, which is scheduled to start in Southampton on Tuesday (September 20).

The South African's availability will be hugely important for Hampshire, as they remain locked in a battle for their first Championship title for nearly 50 years.

They started the week eight points clear of Surrey, having played a game more. Surrey are currently in action against Northamptonshire at Wantage Road.

Abbott, who recently signed a two-year contract extension at the Ageas Bowl, has taken 53 Championship wickets in 2022 at an average of a sliver over 20.
