Bristol (day three of four): Gloucestershire 546, Glamorgan 385 & 106-0 - Glamorgan trail Gloucestershire by 55 runs with 10 wickets remaining

Gloucestershire paceman Zaman Akhter produced an incisive bowling performance to ask questions of Glamorgan on day three of the County Championship Second Division match at Bristol's Seat Unique Stadium.

Colin Ingram top-scored with 103, and Chris Cooke contributed 56 in a rearguard action for the Welsh county, but Akhter's return of 5-85 from 20.5 overs and 3-61 from fellow quick Ajeet Singh Dale ensured Glamorgan were dismissed for 385, a first-innings deficit of 161.

With the possibility of a first red-ball win in Bristol since September 2022 before them, Gloucestershire enforced the follow-on, only to then be frustrated by openers Zain-ul-Hassan and Eddie Byron, who scored 51 not out and 47 not out, respectively, to usher Glamorgan to the close on 106 without loss. The visitors trail by 55 runs, and their chances of saving the game on the final day vastly improved.

Canterbury (day three of four): Middlesex 222 & 311, Kent 218 & 316 - Kent win by eight wickets

Tawanda Muyeye and Ben Compton both hit centuries as Kent coasted to an eight-wicket run win over Middlesex in the County Championship at Canterbury on Sunday.

Muyeye made a fluent unbeaten 125 and Compton a stylish 124 not out in a record-breaking partnership worth 225, after England's Zak Crawley showed a glimpse of form with 58, having being dropped on nought.

Earlier Middlesex were all out for 311, setting Kent what looked like a stiff target of 316 to win. Ben Geddes made 75 and Zafar Gohar contributed 57 down the order, but Gohar was the only visiting bowler to enjoy any success, claiming two wickets in two balls to reduce Kent to 91 for 2. That, however, was as good as it got for the visitors, and Compton hit the winning single with 5.4 overs of day three remaining.

Old Trafford (day three of four): Northamptonshire 496, Lancashire 228 & 126-2 - Lancashire trail by 142 runs with eight wickets remaining

Northamptonshire are closing in on a first County Championship victory at Old Trafford since 1999, and only their fourth win at Lancashire's headquarters, after bowling the hosts out for 228 and then having the home side 126 for 2 in their second innings after enforcing the follow-on.

Liam Guthrie gave Northamptonshire the dream start when he trapped Michael Jones lbw for 0 with an inswinger as Lancashire batted a second time but the visitors' victory quest was held up by a resolute 120-run partnership between Keaton Jennings, who added 49 runs to go with his first innings 96 and Josh Bohannon who remains unbeaten on 67.

Bohannon took 146 balls to reach his half century and batted with great determination while his 7 fours included a lovely, wristy flick of the wrists off Harrison to the midwicket fence, but the bowler changed ends and produced what could be a decisive moment in the match by finding the edge of Jennings' bat six overs before stumps – his fifth wicket in this match – with Lewis McManus delightedly taking his 100th first-class dismissal.

Four first innings wickets for Harrison and three by Justin Broad led a fine bowling effort by Northamptonshire who took the remaining Lancashire wickets by the seventh over of the afternoon session, backing up the massive 496 accumulated by their batsmen, to put their side in the box seat after three days.

Leicester (day three of four): Leicestershire 484 & 291-8, Derbyshire 346-8 - Leicestershire lead by 382 runs with two wickets remaining

Leicestershire will take a lead of 382 into the final day of their County Championship against neighbours Derbyshire, who will need to pull off the biggest fourth-innings run chase in their history to emerge with a win.

Leicestershire were 291 for 8 in their second innings when bad light, followed by rai,n ended play eight overs ahead of the scheduled finish time.

Rehan Ahmed hammered 77 off 59 balls in an explosive start to their second innings after Derbyshire had been bowled out for 393, Netherlands international all-rounder Logan van Beek taking 4 for 100 to go with his unbeaten 82 on his Leicestershire debut.

By the end of the day, however, the scoring rate had slowed considerably, the home side appearing to take a safety-first approach, intent first on avoiding defeat on a pitch that has yielded runs quickly for most of the game.
