Fixture: Yorkshire v Glamorgan

Venue: Emerald Headingley

Dates: Thursday, April 8-Sunday, April 11

Start time: 11am

What’s the lowdown?

Yorkshire will be aiming to make a strong start in the County Championship against a Glamorgan outfit which is thin on the ground.

Yorkshire were impressive in the Bob Willis Trophy last summer, and harbour aspirations of making the top group of the second round of this year’s revamped Championship.

They are buoyed by the availability of Joe Root, the England Test captain.

Glamorgan are the outsiders in this pool, which also includes Kent, Northamptonshire, Lancashire and Sussex.

What’s the team news?

Yorkshire will be without Gary Ballance for the fixture after he suffered concussion from what the club are describing as a “freak injury” in training.

Joe Root is included in the matchday squad, but allrounder Jordan Thompson is not yet fit after a calf tear. Matthew Waite strained his side during the recent friendly against Durham MCCU and is being assessed by Yorkshire’s medical team.

Yorkshire have named a 12-strong squad: Dom Bess, Harry Brook, Ben Coad, Matthew Fisher, Tom Loten, Adam Lyth, Duanne Olivier, Steve Patterson, Joe Root, Jonny Tattersall, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, David Willey.

James Weighell comes straight into the Glamorgan squad after signing a two-year deal.

Irish batsman Andy Balbirnie and left-arm seamer Jamie McIlroy could both make their debuts after being included in the 13-man squad.

Ruadhri Smith (hamstring) has not been passed fit for action by the county's medical team yet, while Prem Sisodiya (shoulder) is proving his fitness with the 2nd XI against Somerset.

Glamorgan squad: Chris Cooke, Andy Balbirnie, Kiran Carlson, Tom Cullen, Dan Douthwaite, Michael Hogan, David Lloyd, Jamie McIlroy, Billy Root, Nick Selman, Callum Taylor, Timm van der Gugten, James Weighell

Who’s said what?

Joe Root will be up against brother Billy, who is on the books at Glamorgan.

"It will be an interesting battle, that’s for sure. But I obviously hope Joe comes out on top," Yorkshire’s director of cricket Martyn Moxon told the club’s website.

"There’s no doubt Billy is a talented player who has done well recently, particularly at Glamorgan. And we will need to get him out early because he can do some damage if not."

Meanwhile, Billy told Glamorgan's in-house media: "We both will say this is just another game of County Championship cricket and there is a job to be done which is true, but there is a little bit more on it for us personally.

"But while it will be nice to play against Joe, this is not about us. This is a game between Yorkshire and Glamorgan, who we will be representing.

"I am just so proud of the Glamorgan boys for the hard work they've put in this winter and everyone is raring to go."

What’s the weather forecast?

A cold start to the new season, with temperatures not getting above 10 degrees throughout the four days of the game.

Very little chance of rain, though.
