COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO ROUNDUP: It was a fruitful day for overseas debutants as the Australia allrounder shared a 167-run stand with fellow centurion James Bracey, and Middlesex seamer Dane Paterson was among the wickets

Derby (day one of four): Derbyshire 216-4 v Northamptonshire

Derbyshire captain Wayne Madsen continued his prolific start to the season by leading an impressive fightback on the opening day of the County Championship Division Two match against Northamptonshire at Derby.

The 41-year-old followed a century in the first game against Gloucestershire and 96 at Leicester on Monday with 89 out of a fourth wicket stand of 169 with Brooke Guest, who was unbeaten on 87 when bad light ended play at 6pm.

Madsen, who this week signed a one-year contract extension, passed 25,000 runs in all formats as his side recovered from 29 for 3 to close on 216 for 4.

Canterbury (day one of four): Gloucestershire 365-7 v Kent

Cameron Green hit a century on his Gloucestershire debut as the visitors posted 365 for 7 on day one of their County Championship game with Kent at Canterbury.

Fellow centurion James Bracey made 109 not out and put on 167 with the Australian international, who had to retire not out on exactly 100 with suspected cramp.

Nathan Gilchrist kept Kent in it with 5 for 61, but the hosts were hindered by an indifferent display in the field and an injury to Grant Stewart.

After winning the toss, Kent stuck with the formula that helped them win their two opening games by choosing to bowl, but they failed to capitalise on a promising start, having reduced Gloucestershire to 15 for 2.

Old Trafford (day one of four): Lancashire 61-3 v Leicestershire

Lancashire batsmen might be grateful that only one session of play was possible on the opening day of their County Championship match against Leicestershire at Emirates Old Trafford.

After being asked to bat first in cloudy conditions, Keaton Jennings' side had proceeded uncertainly to 61 for 3 at lunch before the light showers that prevented a resumption coalesced into the steady drizzle that caused play to be abandoned at 4.30pm.

In the first hour of play, the former Hampshire allrounder, Ian Holland, got plenty of help from the pitch and removed both Michael Jones, bowled between bat and pad for 10, and Keaton Jennings, caught at first slip for nine in an eight-over spell that cost only 13 runs.

Lord's (day one of four): Glamorgan 199, Middlesex 66-0 - Middlesex trail by 136 runs with 10 wickets remaining

Middlesex's bowlers shared the wickets around as they dismissed Glamorgan for 199 to take control on the opening day of their County Championship Division Two encounter at Lord's.

Skipper Toby Roland-Jones led a mid-afternoon recovery with 3 for 44 after Glamorgan had looked well-placed at 108 for 1, while Middlesex debutant Dane Paterson was among another trio to collect two wickets apiece.

Opener Zain ul Hassan top-scored with 65, his second 50-plus score in as many innings, but the visitors failed to build on that solid foundation and needed Ben Kellaway’s maiden half-century, a fearless unbeaten 54, to get then anywhere near 200.

Middlesex openers Stephen Eskinazi and Nathan Fernandes reached stumps unscathed with an unbroken stand of 63 in response to leave their side trailing by 136 going into the second day.
