"A dark finish on the sticker and a generous middle to fall in love with"

RRP: £195, Edges: 39mm, Weight: 2lb 12oz

They don't come much more traditional in the English bat market than Gunn and Moore. So, this is a worthy model for the 2025 summer: Few frills in the design, a dark finish on the sticker and a generous middle to fall in love with.

That is if you're in the market for a heavier option. Bryony Smith, the England all-rounder and Surrey Women captain, suggested that it was too weighty for her liking but also praised its high middle and "attractive stickers".

Nick Friend, The Cricketer's tester and journalist, agreed, concerned by its pick-up but impressed by its performance.

The square toe is a modern twist, but otherwise this is eminently recognisable as the work of Gunn and Moore.

"A brilliant middle," gushed one student. "It really pinged off and the sound was great."

"Certainly better than the initial feel," added Smith. "For a cheaper bat, this is decent if you find the middle."

You could do worse than to find yourself striding out to the crease with one of these.
