Hobart: Sydney Thunder 135, Hobart Hurricanes 136-5 - Hobart Hurricanes win by five wickets

Scorecard

Tim David inspired Hobart Hurricanes to an important victory in a tense clash with Sydney Thunder at Blundstone Arena.

Hurricanes chased down 136 for the loss of five wickets with relative ease in the end, but only after David intervened following a poor start, which had seen Hobart reduced to 20 for 3 in the third over.

The hard-hitting Australian smashed an unbeaten 76 off just 41 deliveries, with Matthew Wade contributing an important 30 after Ben McDermott, Caleb Jewell and Zak Crawley had fallen within the first 17 balls of their reply.

Things might have been different though, if Thunder had taken their chances: Ollie Davies dropped Wade early in his knock, while Usman Qadir thought he had David on 41 only for it to be called a no-ball.

The action was briefly overshadowed by a flashpoint when the pair were at the crease, with David Warner and Sydney captain Chris Green both getting involved.

Warner had earlier fallen without scoring, bowled second ball by Riley Meredith, who also trapped Sam Whiteman in front to leave Sydney similarly reeling at 19 for 3.

A Nathan Ellis hat-trick made up of the dismissal of Matthew Gilkes in the fourth over and two wickets – of Davies and Nathan McAndrew – at the start of the 15th over further stunted a stuttering innings. His figures – 4 for 27 – are the best of his T20 career.

Left-arm spinner Paddy Dooley – on his return to the side after a couple of niggling injuries – cleaned up the tail, taking 3 for 22 as Hurricanes leapfrogged their opponents to move into fifth.
