The bottom club from the last two campaigns will go first in the competition's first player draft on August 28
Melbourne Renegades will pick first in the inaugural Big Bash League overseas player draft.
In a weighted draw, the eighth-place side from each of the last two seasons came out first ahead of Melbourne Stars and Brisbane Heat.
A draw of the five sides to reach the BBL|11 playoffs followed, with beaten finalists Sydney Sixers preceding Adelaide Strikers.
Defending champions Perth Scorchers will go sixth before Sydney Thunder and Hobart Hurricanes - who were drawn last despite having more entries in the draw than any of their rivals.
Renegades will pick first from the platinum-only section, and in rounds two and four. The order will be reversed for round three, with the Hurricanes selecting first. Sides must pick a minimum of two and a maximum of three players and have to pass in at least one round.
"I've got to say I was a little bit nervous because we've done so much since the end of last season around building confidence around the club and doing things differently and changing the way things have been done in the past," Renegades general manager James Rosengarten told cricket.com.au.
"One of the key things was more structured selection of our overseas players and that was an area we'd fallen down.

"We've been pretty targeted on the kinds of players that we need and then it comes down to working through the nominations of who's in the pool and making sure that we get the right players.
"We've got three or four real needs for our team and we'll look to fill those needs with this player."
The salary for platinum players in round one sits at $340,000 (£195,599), platinum and gold in round two is $260,000 (£149,576), gold and silver players in round three is $175,000 (£100,672) and $100,000 (£57,527) for silver and bronze in round four.
All franchises have an option to retain a player from last season's overseas roster. Those eligible who have declared for the draft include Rashid Khan (Adelaide Strikers), Qais Ahmad (Melbourne Stars) and Colin Munro (Perth Scorchers).
Just 28 of the 170+ players to have declared an interest in the draft - they have entered themselves in the gold, silver and bronze categories and could then be promoted to platinum by the BBL - have been revealed. They include Kieron Pollard, Dwayne Bravo, Faf du Plessis and Rilee Rossouw.
The draft will take place on August 28.
