Kane Richardson will step in to lead Melbourne Renegades in the early days of the new Big Bash season, deputising for Nic Maddinson.

Richardson, the 30-year-old seamer, will take over in his absence.

Another option for the interim captaincy, the former skipper Aaron Finch, is struggling with a knee injury and may not be fit enough to start the term.
Fellow senior pro Shaun Marsh, meanwhile, has been ruled out of action for several weeks and may not play until the new year because of a calf tear.
Renegades begin their Big Bash fixture list against Adelaide Strikers on Tuesday, December 7.
