Australia captain Tim Paine has been fined for “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision” during the third Test against India in Sydney.
The incident occurred in the 56th over of India’s first innings on Saturday, when Paine criticised the on-field umpires following an unsuccessful DRS review against batsman Cheteshwar Pujara.
Paine approached umpire Paul Wilson after believing that he had seen a spike as the ball passed the bat as the big screen showed the review.
Wilson said: “He's making the decision, not me, I'm not the third umpire.” Paine was heard replying: “F***ing consistency, Blocker (Wilson), there’s a thing (a spike) that goes past it.”
Paine has been fined 15 per cent of his match fee, having breached Level One of the ICC code of conduct.
In addition, a single demerit point has been added to Paine’s record; it was his first offence in a two-year period.
Paine admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee David Boon. There was no need for a formal hearing. Umpires Paul Reiffel and Paul Wilson, third umpire Bruce Oxenford and fourth official Claire Polosak levelled the charge.
