Matt Renshaw persuaded to take an indefinite break after being dropped by Queensland

The 23-year-old endured a poor start to the Sheffield Shield season and failed to fully recover his form during the Big Bash

Ex-Australia Test opener Matt Renshaw will take a break from cricket following a meeting with Queensland management.

The 23-year-old has endured a poor campaign, scoring just 182 runs at 20.22 in the Sheffield Shield.

Renshaw enjoyed an improved Big Bash League season with Brisbane Heat (348 runs at 29) but after being dropped for the Shield clash with Tasmania a quick decision has been taken.

Usman Khawaja, Joe Burns and 20-year-old Bryce Street were selected ahead of Renshaw, who has played 11 Tests for Australia but not since 2018.

A meeting between Queensland Cricket officials, coaching staff and Renshaw led to the initially resistant left-hander agreeing to a spell away from the sport.

As a result, he also ruled himself out of selection for the Cricket Australia XI due to face England Lions in Hobart this weekend.

"As part of our usual review process of player performance, our coaching and support staff spent time with Matthew this week and they all came to the conclusion that he would benefit from some time away from cricket," Queensland Cricket's general manager Bennett King said.

"We’re confident Matthew will benefit from a break from the game to freshen up and look forward to working with him once he is ready to resume playing."

Glenn Maxwell, Nic Maddinson, Will Pucovski and Sophie Molineux have all taken breaks from cricket in recent months, to help manage mental health issues. Pakistan's Sana Mir also took time out from cricket in 2019.
