Australia coach Justin Langer has urged his team to improve their record with the Decision Review System after their judgement potentially cost them in the third Ashes Test at Headingley.

Captain Tim Paine was unable to refer a not-out lbw decision made by standing umpire Joel Wilson against Ben Stokes after the tourists wasted their two reviews earlier in the England innings.

Ball-tracking later showed the delivery from Nathan Lyon would have gone on to hit the stumps however it is possible that under greater scrutiny the officials would have noticed the ball striking Stokes' front pad, which the DRS did not take into account.

England were two runs from victory at the time and had used their final review five deliveries previous as they desperately attempted to take the wicket which would have ensured they retained the Ashes.

On that occasion, Paine called for the DRS after Pat Cummins struck the pad of No.11 Jack Leach, but the technology showed the ball pitching well outside leg-stump.

Ben Stokes, who hit an unbeaten 135, secured victory from the next Cummins over as England squared the series after chasing down 359, their highest total to win a Test, to square the series at 1-1 with two matches remaining.

Having failed with 14 of their 23 reviews during the series, wicket-keeper skipper Paine admitted he will give up making review decisions when Australia are in the field and Langer wants to see a seismic improvement.

"We've been really poor at it this whole series," he said. "We talked a lot about getting better at our reviews. There wasn't so many this game as there were at Lord's, but certainly, we have control of that.

"We have your way we go about it, but sometimes you don't quite get it right. To be fair, the one-off Pat Cummins, it was getting pretty desperate at the end there and that often happens. That's just how it works out.

"The umpire should make the decision he thinks is right regardless of reviews in my opinion. If they think it's out they should give it, if they don't they should give it not out. The review system is as it is and sometimes they go your way, sometimes they don't."
