Tim Paine’s team have slipped to sixth in the One-Day International rankings after consecutive defeats to Eoin Morgan’s England.
Australia suffered a four-wicket defeat in the opener at The Oval before England went 2-0 up in the series with a 38-run victory at Cardiff.
The tourists would need to win all three remaining fixtures in the five-match series if they are to move above Pakistan in fifth place.
If England go on to win the series, it will make the first time that an Australian side has lost four consecutive bilateral series (minimum two matches).
Cricket.com.au note that Australia have not been as low as sixth the ODI rankings since January 1984.
