Australia eased past England in the first ODI in Adelaide. The Cricketer takes a look at the performances of each player at the Adelaide Oval...

ENGLAND

Jason Roy (6 & DNB): Batted like a player short on confidence before being undone by a peachy full delivery from Mitchell Starc. Not the return to the international stage he would have wanted. 2

Phil Salt (14 & DNB): Started brightly, picking off a couple of early boundaries, before edging Pat Cummins to second slip while defending. Took the catch to remove Travis Head. 3.5

Dawid Malan (134 & 0-12): A textbook knock. Anchored England through the bulk of their innings and finished with a strike rate in excess of 100 without leaving the middle gears. 9.5

James Vince (5 & DNB): Six balls and out, a little nip going through to Alex Carey. A combination of cracking bowling and rusty batting. 2

Sam Billings (17 & DNB): Another player undone by Australia's bowlers mixing up their lengths; failed to capitalise on a good start. Good catch to remove Warner. 3.5

Jos Buttler (29 & DNB): Solid 52-run stand with Malan and upped the ante by playing his shots from the get-go. A slightly unnecessary loft into the deep curtailed a strong start. Tidy with the gloves. 6

Liam Dawson (11 & 1-65): Stuck around with Malan before a poor call resulted in him being run out. Unhelpful conditions for a spinner but probably deserved a wicket in the grand scheme of things. 5

Chris Jordan (14 & 1-49): A handful of useful lower order runs. Not his best day with the ball but did take the big wicket of Travis Head. 5

David Willey (34* & 2-51): Productive at the death with the bat, sharing useful partnerships with Malan and Luke Wood. Expensive in the powerplay but recovered well, picking up two wickets, and often looked like England's most threatening bowler. 7

Luke Wood (10 & 0-59): Kept the scoreboard ticking over with the bat. Bowled well enough. 6

Olly Stone (0* & 0-50): Started with a maiden and maintained good pace throughout. Promising signs. 6.5

AUSTRALIA

David Warner (DNB & 86): Looked in fine touch in the company of Travis Head and Steve Smith, scoring his 27th ODI half-century. 8.5

Travis Head (DNB & 69): Good, positive batting alongside Warner and broke the back of Australia's chase. A promising start for this new partnership. 7.5

Steve Smith (DNB & 80*): Back to something approaching his best after a disappointing T20 World Cup. Built on the foundations laid by the openers and deservedly hit the winning runs. 8

Marnus Labuschagne (DNB & 4): Aside from a bit of chirping and a six-ball stint with the bat, he was largely absent. 2

Alex Carey (DNB & 21): Solid behind the stumps. Rode out a testing period with the bat before getting out in the deep. 5.5

Cameron Green (0-38 & 20): Nightmare start - a no-ball four - transitioned into a tidy, if not particularly memorable, contribution with the ball. Stuck around with Smith for an unbeaten run-a-ball partnership. 6.5

Marcus Stoinis (1-23 & DNB): Useful wicket, removing Billings early. 5

Ashton Agar (0-62 & DNB): Bowled better than his figures suggest and energetic in the field, chipping in with two catches and a fine throw to run out Dawson. 6

Pat Cummins (3-62 & DNB): Two sixes from Malan aside, a fine performance from the captain, particularly in the powerplay where he picked up two early wickets. 7

Mitchell Starc (1-45 & DNB): Excellent throughout and a marvellous ball to dismiss Roy. Deserved more than one wicket. 8

Adam Zampa (3-55 & DNB): A tidy performance from the spinner. Bowled a couple of clever deliveries to remove Buttler, Jordan and Malan. 7
