The MCC has expelled one of its members following the incident which marred the final day of the Ashes Test at Lord's.

Footage showed several members embroiled in heated exchanges with Australian players as they walked through the Long Room following the run-out of Jonny Bairstow.

As a result, the club's chief executive, Guy Lavender, launched an investigation which led to a disciplinary process. That has now concluded with complaints against three members upheld on the basis they used "abusive, offensive or inappropriate behaviour or language."

As well as the expulsion, two MCC members have been handed lengthy suspensions from the club.

"The club referred three separate complaints to the chair of MCC's disciplinary panel, Mark Milliken-Smith KC, under rule 6.1," Lavender wrote in a message to members. "Mr. Milliken-Smith determined that each complaint raised issues of misconduct such that it was appropriate for a disciplinary panel to be convened.

"Each case was heard separately and a disciplinary panel found each complaint to have been proved. An appeal was lodged by one individual and a disciplinary appeal panel was convened. Now that the appeal process has concluded, I can report that the following penalties have been imposed, respectively, on the three members: expulsion; four-and-a-half year's suspension; 30 months suspension."

The MCC did not name the individuals who had been sanctioned. They also conceded it was "clear that a wider group of members were guilty of breaching the club's code of conduct" but admitted their "investigation has not yet been able positively to identify further individuals."

The incident was an embarrassment to a club that continues to act as 'custodian' of the Laws of the game and a venue which is unique in seeing the players walk through a members' room on their way to the field of play.

The members who were apparently incensed by the run-out of Bairstow seemed unaware that the dismissal was legitimate under the Laws their club curates.

Ridiculously lenient as far as the suspensions are concerned. Just for being involved ,the latter two individuals should have been expelled as well. Failing that, the suspensions should have been longer and of equal severity: Five years each.
