The Australian seamer thought he had the England captain caught behind - but upon review replays showed the ball shaved the stumps on its way through to Tim Paine
England captain Joe Root survived being dismissed by James Pattinson in remarkable circumstances on day two of the second Test at Edgbaston.
The seamer initially thought he had Root caught behind after umpire Joel Wilson raised his finger following a noise as the ball passed the Yorkshireman's bat.
Root reviewed the decision immediately and subsequent replays and the snickometer confirmed that the England No.3 had made no contact with the ball.
But the footage also showed the ball rattle into off-stump, which moved out of the ground - hence the wooden-like noise - but the bails remain in place.
Luck is on England's side! 🤞

Australia's players were fuming upon reviewing the video and protested to umpire Wilson, appearing to complain over the weight of the bails.
The episode comes after a World Cup which saw five batsmen in the opening 13 matches survive the ball striking the stumps, with the infamous Zing Bails remaining in place on top of the stumps.
Those same bails were also evident during the Indian Premier League, when similar issues arose, but are not being used for the Ashes this summer.
