Chris Woakes will be replaced by Craig Overton in the England side for the fourth Ashes Test at Old Trafford.

Overton was added to the England squad last week after Jimmy Anderson was ruled out for the remainder of the series with a calf problem.

Joe Root confirmed the Somerset seamer's inclusion in the starting XI during his pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

"At this ground, it does perform slightly different," said the skipper.

"You get a bit more bounce from a taller bowler and it gives us a slightly different option to go to. I feel like that balances out our attack really well in these conditions.

During his short Test career, Overton has taken seven wickets at 42.28. In the County Championship in 2019, the right-arm seamer has taken 32 scalps at 21.34.

The 25-year-old made his Test debut against Australia in Adelaide in 2017 and Root has no concerns over Overton's ability to rise to the challenge in Manchester.

"He is a competitor. He came into Ashes cricket on debut and straight away looked at home. Got himself straight in a battle and I expect the same this week.

"He has good control, good skills, moves the ball off the straight and I expect him to cause some problems for the Aussie batters."

Surrey's Sam Curran is set for another watching brief having again been named in the initial 12-man squad for the game.

England have also swapped Joe Denly and Jason Roy in their batting order, with Denly moved up to open and Roy dropping down to No.4 after a series of low scores.

Otherwise, the home side are unchanged for the game, which is due to get underway on Wednesday.

The series is locked at 1-1, with Australia able to retain The Ashes with victory in Manchester.

Good to see a bit of common sense from these selectors. Woakes is clearly mentally and physically tired, not having had a break from the beginning of the World Cup. Root has clearly been reluctant to bowl him for the last 2 tests, hence the Herculean efforts required from Stokes. Also his batting has ceased to be reliable and with seven batsmen in the line up we shouldnt need his runs as badly.
