Australia and England's players have been fined 40 per cent of their match fees as a punishment for slow over rates in the first Ashes Test.

Both captains, Pat Cummins and Ben Stokes, pleaded guilty to the offences therefore there was no need for any formal hearings.
The charges were levelled by the officiating team at Edgbaston: Ashan Raza, Marais Erasmus, Chris Gaffaney, and Mike Burns.

I fully agree with points being docked for slow play to the teams, but players getting fined 40% of their match fee seems unusually harsh. Test cricket needs to be doing all it can to encourage players to stick with the format, as opposed to deserting it for franchise cricket. A fine like that doesn't help.
