Somerset captain Tom Abell faces a spell on the sidelines after suffering a hamstring injury.

No timeframe has yet been confirmed for the batsman’s recovery but the county confirmed via their official website that he would miss Wednesday’s T20 Blast clash with Surrey at the Kia Oval.

Somerset’s head of science and medicine, Jamie Thorpe, revealed that “he was suffering from an acute hamstring injury”, with scans showing a tear.

He was initially ruled out of Saturday evening’s Blast washout against Glamorgan at late notice after initially reporting thigh pain in the warmup.

“He will now undergo a specifically tailored rehabilitation programme in order to get him back out on the field as soon as possible,” added Thorpe.

“Any timeframe regarding his return will entirely depend on how he responds to the programme and the specific loadings. That will give us a much better indication of when he will return.”

Abell is due to represent Birmingham Phoenix in the inaugural edition of The Hundred, which begins in a month’s time, while Somerset have six Blast matches in the next 10 days.

They then face Leicestershire and Surrey in the final two rounds of the first stage of this year’s County Championship, with Somerset top of a tight group.
