Although he was dismissed cheaply in the final against New Zealand at Lord’s, Morgan more than played his part with the bat during the tournament
Eoin Morgan has admitted he will take his time before deciding whether he wishes to continue as England’s one-day captain.
The World Cup-winning skipper, 32, who will be 36 years old by the time the 2023 World Cup takes place in India, has been a hugely influential figure in English cricket since being given a blank canvas from which to build a new England team after his side’s shambolic performances at the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
Although he was dismissed cheaply in the final against New Zealand at Lord’s, Morgan more than played his part with the bat during the tournament, striking a record-breaking 147 against Afghanistan at Old Trafford during the group stage – a knock that included 17 sixes in a brutal assault on Afghanistan’s highly-rated spinners.
"I don't think I'm in a good state to make a decision at the moment, just simply that I haven't had a chance to get away from the madness and the craze of winning the World Cup," Morgan told BBC Sport on Friday.
"It's taken a huge amount out of me, both mentally and physically so once everything calms down over the next couple of months I'll hopefully come to a decision that at the forefront of it will be my family and the team."
An alternative – and possibly more likely – arrangement for Morgan would see the left-hander remain in place for the World T20 competition in 2020.
As England’s T20 captain, Morgan oversaw the 2016 tournament when England finished as runners-up. On that occasion, Ben Stokes’ final over to Carlos Brathwaite infamously saw West Indies clinch a stunning victory in India.
